Show The Wisconsin Election Returns up to midnight last night indicate the election of Congressman Lenroot of Wisconsin, as U. S. Senator to fill the place made vacant through the death of Senator Paul Husting, over Joseph E. Davies democrat and Victor Berger, Socialist. Notwithstanding Notwithstand-ing the fact that Wisconsin, has, been reputed to be pro-German, by the ballot she has shown herself to be loyal. Notwithstanding the fact that the strength of the, administration was thrown to Davies, and that the President of the United States asked the people of Wisconsin to elect him, the voters of the Badger State have apparently decreed otherwise, and thus President Wilson has been politely tol.d that he should keep out of state elections. Even should later returns change the result, the election will be so close that the President will know it is not unanimous. We agree in the, main with the Salt Lake Tribune in'its criticism o'fpolitics in congress, and certainly would approve of a condition where all parties were bent on one purpose, the winning of the war, but it seems so utterly preposterous to insist that Republicans Republi-cans lay down and go around with sealed lips, while the' strength and' power of the administration is thrown into a democratic fight and. the President himself takes a hand and asks the voters of a sovereign sover-eign state to elect a democrat. If the Salt Lake Tribune Trib-une in its criticism of certain gentlemen atWashing-ton atWashing-ton for taking a hand in politics will just head the list with, the President' of the United States, its criticism will be most timely and just. If Mr. Thompson, trra Lafollette candidate had been nominated at the primary prim-ary election, instead of Mr. Lenroot, then all good loyal citizens would have been justified in asking republicans to join with the democrats in the election elec-tion of Mr. Davies, but after Mr. Thompson was beaten, and it became evident, as Senator Reed said, "that either Lenroot or Davies would be elected, and in either case a loyalist would be chosen,- it was then time to leave the matter to the people of Wisconsin. |
