Show Communications Un c t To the Editor z r There has been a good de deal l said recently on our campus camp campus a about school spirit It I Is Is' Isan an Indefinable thing this something that causes colleges to possess fighting football teams and unified student bodies and It t seems that whatever what ver It ma may maybe be be it it t can be manifest In a variety of ways Perhaps some of the manifestations that pass pass tor for school spirit are really something else entirely en en en- different but In the minds of ol many they are confused With the thereal thereal thereal real thing Noisy exhibitions with wit witha a good deal of shouting and playing by the band of college songs have their place place college college life wouldn't b be anything without them them but but the the conception that they always always always' mean inear true school spirit Is Js erroneous It ItIs ItIs Itis Is easy enough to feel little thrills thrill up our spines es when the band Is IE playing and pur par team is on the big Wf end of the score In a a. football game But sometimes It Is quite another thing to feel that same n spirit p when the music has ceased and the the shouting shout about ing has died True spirit shows itself sometimes sometimes some some- sometimes times In humble ways ways and Its It's best examples are often found where we might not think to look for them Last Friday night we we held a pil- pil grimmage to the U A large crowd of students and alumni turned turn turn- ed out out and all seemed to be Imbued Im with a lot of pep making the a a fine success ss With but one one exception all who who went up to the U U were were strong and able able- bodied and Md well able ahle to make the hike bike albeit it a large number came In automobiles automobile The IThe exception was was a s. freshman student a gre green green n cap set jauntily on his head his thin shoulders hunched with the effort of moving himself with a s. pair a-pair of crutches A short slight alight fellow whose legs would not have have been too too long and strong had bad they both been good legs he he trudged up the hill to the big Wg U and back again all again all alone alone Ye Yet t back on the campus he remarked smilingly enthusiastic that It had If It he lie been a great evening even had rather a s. hard bard time making the hIlI hill bill Indefinable to be Sure this thing that we call school spirit Shouting and singing are a s. part of It It but itIs Itis it itis is something more something finer and deeper It can be born only of a splendid love for fora a school and her ideals her ber traditions of the past and her hopes of the future and It shows out brightest and finest when the band has ceased playing and the hills seems harder to make To me therell there'll there Is a music more Inspirational inspirational In In- In the quiet tap tap-tap tap tap-tap of the crippled d boys boy's Snitches crutches than In Inthe Inthe inthe the playing of the Utah Ut h Man Just after we have emerged victorious from the football Held field It Is la the true Utah spirit |
