Show CHICAGO HELPLESS IN SNOWDRIFTS Chicago, Jan. 9. Twenty-four hours after abatement of the unprecedented unpre-cedented Sunday bllxsard, Chicago's streets were sUll badly Impeded. The traffic for the most part was confined con-fined to the paths made by street can which made uncertain progress through canyons of snow heaped and drifted on either aide. By offering bonasea the city obtained ob-tained S00O laborers for the street cleaning department, but although private firms lent men and carts the snow pllss, heaped by the greatest single storm on record, had not perceptibly per-ceptibly decreased at nightfall. Many an automobile, stalled, remained so, as the demands tor help far outnumbered outnum-bered the wrecking crews available at garagea and livery stables. Taxicab companies confined their service to streets made passable by the street cars. I Passenger trains arrived from one ,to eight hours late and the schedules of freight trains were obliterated. In- terurban trains shared the common fate with few exceptions. Even without any further snowfall it was aald that a week would be required re-quired to restore the streets to their normal state. |
