Alice Joyce Is seen In one of her most appealing roles as Ann, and Is supported by a cast ot exceptional merit. Ann believes she Is Mrs. Fenton, wife of a respected and prosperous business man until detectives come to her home. Then she learns that Fenton Is a gambler and fugitive from the law; that her marriage was bigamous;, and that her baby boy has no father5 The child is adopted by force by a Helping Hand Society and shipped to a brutal farmer in the 'country and she is turned into the street. Seven years pass and Ann Is office of-fice assistant to a Dr. Evans a very kind and reputable surgeon. She loves him and, is about to accept his offer o'f marriage when she receives a letter from David Carberry, school roaster in the town where her son is held in bondage offering her a position as teacher. Yearning to bo near Billy and not daring to tell Evans of the existence of the child, she steals away leaving a note telling tell-ing the surgeon only that she loves blm, but can never marry him. - A few months ot happiness pass, then gossip and suspicion drive her from the village and her son. Fenton has returned to the city and to him she appeals for the $200 needed to buy her child's freedom. He brutally refuses and drives her fainting from his gambling house. She Is found by Ruth, an associate ot the gamblers, who recognises her as a one time "Mrs Fenton," and In pity takes her o fier apartment. Evans, who owns the premises occupied oc-cupied by Fenton, Is told by the police po-lice to get rid of his tenants. Fenton. Fen-ton. learns that the surgeon Is In love with Ann and starts to use his secret sec-ret as a club to remain In the property. prop-erty. Meantime, the woman who had haved Ann, notifies Eyans who hurries, hur-ries, to the. apartment and learning .the whole story from Ruth, Insists on an Immediate wedding and the reclaiming ot Billy. |
