It was through that dangerous delta that tho surveying steamer Yukon found a chnnnel hitherto hither-to uncharted, Tho newly discovered chunnel will enablo steamship companies com-panies to send vessels up Into tho Kuskokwlm, and thus to begin tho exploitation ex-ploitation of tho mining, fishing, and agricultural riches of the region. Captain Cap-tain Lukcns reports that In making the survey ho took 14,256 soundings, over an area of moro than a hundred I square miles, and that In romo In-I In-I stances ho determined tho position of his soundings by making observations on mountain peaks moro than CO miles away.
