Substantially tho samo measure bos been before Con gress several years, and demand for tome federal participation in road building Is getting stronger. "The Shackleford bill In its present pres-ent form provides that not over $25.-000,000 $25.-000,000 a year shall be appropriated to be distributed among tho states In tho ratio of their population und of their mileage of country roads over ov-er which mallg are carried. Thus Maine would get $270,000 a year, New York $1,594,000, Kansas $747,000 and so on. Tho money Is to be expended ex-pended by tho state highway department, depart-ment, building roads selected by the state and approved by tho Secretary of Agriculture; and tho federal contribution con-tribution shall not be less than 30 nor over 50 per cent of tho cost. Tho effort of course Is to encourage especially es-pecially tho construction of the best types of road, ond to provldo object lessons In tho construction. Twenty-five Twenty-five millions a year would not go far but It might Induce states and counties coun-ties to renewed effort In order to Insure In-sure that they would get their share of the federal generosity." |
