Y., nnd a gllmpso of Hamilton college, bo closely Identified with his entlro career, throw Interesting Interest-ing sidelights upon his llfo story. Schoolmates wero found living at Clin- ' ton who remembered "llttlo Ellhu" as a child and recalled tho shrill, high-pitched high-pitched volco that today resounds in tho senate chamber. As industrious thon as ho Is today, his boyhood friends insist that ho grows moro and moro "tho vory picture" of his noted father, who belonged to tho brilliant lino of American toachers who popularized popu-larized mathematics in the nineteenth century. Out of his hearing, Prof. Oren Root was called "Cube Root," and one son, Senator Root's brother, who succoeded his father as professor profes-sor of mathematics, was facetiously called "Squar Root" appropriate and yet loving titles for men eminent emi-nent in the study of mathematics.
