Show PILOTS SHIP TO BREMEN American Skipper Takes Carno of Cotton, First Since Outbreak of War, to Germany Bremen, Jan. 5. Owing to tho dnrlng of an American skipper tho steamer Elmonto, which sailed from Galveston, Texas, Docorabor 3 and New York December 11, arrived at Bremen en January 1. Tho Elmonto brought moro than 0000 bales of cotton, cot-ton, the first to reach this port during dur-ing the war. She was tho first American Am-erican merchantman to visit Dromon In forty years. Captain Edward T. Plnchln of tho Elmonto, after tho voyngo across tho Atlantic, took on a British pilot nt Deal, but dropped him at tho Hook of Holland. At tho Hook Dutch pilots refused to assist tho American skipper, skip-per, saying that it was Impossible on account of mines to mako tho trip. Captain Plnchln said ho would tako his ship to her destination or know the reason why. Accordingly ho proceeded without a pilot, picking his own course- without mlno charts or othor uld. Ho mado his way to Bremen, greatly to tho amazoraont of the Germans who woro much Interested Inter-ested in his adventure. |
