Tho Standard Oil company paid Into tho federal court here today $23,766, tho fine assesed against It for accepting rebates. This Is the first fine ever collected trom the company since tho prosecution under tho antl-rebato law wore begun. Tho company was Indicted by tho federal grand Jury early In 1908 for accepting robates on oil shipments from Olean, N. Y., to Bellows Falls,. Vt. Judgo Hazel, who heard tho caso hero, decided that thoro existed an arrangement between tho Standard Oil company and tho railroads .and tho lattor were subsequently Indicted. The conviction was obtalnod In Juno, 1908, and a flno or $20,000 was Imposed in March the following year Judgmont was entored In Juno, 1909. An appeal of the oil company to the United States court for a writ of certiorari cer-tiorari was denied and there was no alternative but to pay the fine. m |
