Show NEW PARADISE SCHOOL I BUILDING NOW BEING I CLASSED A "DUGOUT" I r . M County Board of Education Is Being Raked Over H the Coals for the Way They Are Treating H the People of Paradise Building Looked upon as a Disgrace in These Days of Edu- H catioual Development H I'aradlse, Sept. 2.1 The excavation for the Paradise district school "dugout" "dug-out" is completed und for some Mine tile men have been busy putiliu; In the cement wnlls of tho basonu'iit of (his disgraceful piece of architecture which Is destined to mako the nliendy 111 pioportloned schoolhouse look more ridiculous than over by Us addition. To say that tho good people of Paradise are angry with tho way m which this work has been carried on ooes not begin to tell the story. They v sh It distinctly understood that this slylo of building Is not their ovn choosing, but that It, wlmn completed, complet-ed, bhnll stand as a proof of the lu fairness and disgraceful A'orlt of thoso who have Imposed such u pntihed up piece of work upon them. Wo feel that tho nppearanco of such 11 structure In our town calls for nn explanation which will place tlu blame whore It belongs. When tho people lenrne.l that u IK'W building was to he elected la Klipdlso, n meeting of the citizens wjie called, and u committee was .appointed .ap-pointed to wait upon the school board, nud do what they could to obtain for Paradise tho best uosslbln building ur tho money. As It was understood that the board mouther llvln-j nearest our home town was the one who was to repiesent us to the board as n whole, tho committee went to tho trouble lo acquaint him only with our dPsiiPH, fur they know then ro mason ma-son fur distrust. Time ofter time this lopresentatlvo I?) of the people ngrecd to meet the c'tbens nnd discuss the scnuolhotua plans; nnd time after time he falleJ to appear, until the people's patience was exhausted. At leng'h with hut u few hours' notice he nppcirtd nt the school house. Very few of the people knew of his coming, therefore veiy few of the people wero out to melt his 'royal highness." He had brought with him the front and rear views only on-ly of the miserable plan, the other views, many people think were loft because they showed the faulty appearance ap-pearance of tho structure. In this meeting he unfolded the plans, tried to bhow un the good qualities of the house and AUHBKf) TO STAND fiV THE PEOPLE AND DO ALL IN HIS POWKH TO SECURE SE-CURE FOR THEM THE PLAN , WHICH THEY DESIRED. How well he did tho latter wo shall presently see. All present were united in condemning con-demning tho "dugout" which Is being constructed. Not one spoke In Its fa vor. Yet this was tho only plan our worthy board member had brought. However, Samuel Oldham contended wildly for an addition to tho old tuilldlng, but for nu upstairs room Instead In-stead of a basement class room. And placed boforo tho home n motion to j ' ui effect. Several frpoke again1'! the . I motion and It wnb voted down. Then Mr. 1). M. Hlckmore made a motion that wo have a new building .separate and npnrt from tho old ono: "that It bo began on a sl room plan, and if sufficient mentis wns not on hand now to complete It that but four 100ms be completed nnd the rest bo given when tho means could bo obtained." This brought forth a volley of protests fiom our strong "ndditionists" who has made u similar mess of our meeting meet-ing house. How over, It received the approing vote of two-thirds of tho people present and spoke tho views of the community as a wholo. As tbo writer was leaving the , grounds, when the meeting was out, 1 he heard this honorable representa : tlve of tho people say to a few whe 1 were gathered arduna him, "Well tb.lt . decision of tho people haa not niol my approval and shall not iij g'rant cd by the board with my oto In Its M favor." AND YET HE WOUD SUP- H PORT THE PEOPLE IN THEIR DE- H SIRES. H The following Saturday tho Board H mot to discuss the Paradise school M house plan. Some of the commlttco M members wont oer to nttend tho M meeting and represent tho people, for H wo no longer felt like trusting tho H matter to Mr. Peterson, our represen- j M tatUo to the board. 1 M Some went, also, who wero not 011 M the committee appointed. Among j H these was our radical nddltlonlst who , M has, from all appearances, long re- garded himself as the only man In tho H town capable of understanding the j H Continued on Pao 5. He was evidently bent mi forcing his plans upon the people and stated to tho hoard that, ot tho citizen's meeting he was outvoted out-voted In number' but not In Judgment and continued his bnrrnnguu for an nddftlon to thu old building denouncing denounc-ing tho Judgment of those, who con-tended con-tended for n new one. He evidently sjood much in harmony with Peterson for the addition Is progressing. "What Is ho getitng out of it," many nro ask-iug. ask-iug. Another thing which surprised those present wns, that up till this time, none of the board, except Peterson, know that Pnrodlso wos not In favor of tho addition, What a glorious representative. rep-resentative. A few days later a petition peti-tion wns prepared asking for o recon-stdera,tlnn recon-stdera,tlnn of tho plans; and that vo bo given a now building In place of "such a structure whlcn would call for ou apology to every stranger which camo to our town," This wns circulated circulat-ed and signed by many of the )eri;ie, there being but one to whom It was presented, who refused to sign. But this appeal lke oil others was entirely en-tirely disregarded. Tho people a.-e Indignant In-dignant ol tho outrageous Imposl'lon and many were In favor of foidbii stopping tho work until wo were giv en due consideration. One other thing: Mr. Peterson said (here was at least $13,000 to bo spent for a building In Paradise, yet tho lowest bid for, this ."dugout" plan was fji,8(r. Perhaps thu elaborate plan for ii school house In Hyruui as described de-scribed In a late Issue of the "Courier" will explain such proceeding..
