Show "ECONOMY" WHAT IT MEANS. It Is about time that the people of Utah should understand that the cry "economy" emanating from Salt Lake is little more than a noise made to cover up a move looking toward Mie consolidation of the Hoards governing the A. 0 of U. and the State University. Univer-sity. In the Interest of "economy" there must be a curtailment of expenses, ex-penses, and where is there a better placo to begin and end than in cutting oil the larger part of the appropriation appropria-tion necessary for the maintenance of the A. C. of 17? llowcan that cut be made to appear reasonable except by removing from the College those onuses onu-ses which the University insists arc but duplications of their own? How can the college be Injured so seriously In any other way, and how can this end be attained better than by a consolidation con-solidation of regents, a majority of which must necessarily be In favor of the State Univeisltv? It must never be forgotten that the State Unlyei-slty Unlyei-slty people have continually sought to advance the Interests of that Institution Insti-tution not by mei It but by breaking down an Institution It prefers to look upon as a rival, rather than as an Institution In-stitution of great worth to the State, an Institution tilling a need the University Uni-versity can not supply. The State University Is a good school and Logan people wish It every good tiling that docs not conic from a sacrifice of our own and the States' Interests, but tills cry of "economy" Is not only the powder pow-der and ball tired at a rival, but Is the shield behind which University soldiers sol-diers hide. There Is economy and economy but there is such a thing as being "penny wise and pound foolish." When the legislators decide to begin their economy in matters where the welfare of their children is concerned; when t'ey decide to economize in favor fa-vor of a school which can sec no other way of Injuring another institution; when they listen to and bow down to the selllshnessof those whose selfishness selfish-ness is not ror State or general good, then a mistake Is bein made. The Agricultural College Is giving Inst ruction ruc-tion to 7,")0 students who need it; 750 students who could not well get that instruction In Salt Lake or chcwhcie. The educational worth of the school is not questioned it is strong in every department. The institution Is worth every icd cent ever spent on It and when anything Is done to injure it, a mistake of a glaring character is being be-ing made. The people of this State should take up this matter personally. Every parent who must send ills children away from home to school, does he want to send them to Salt Lake where vice and immoiality is lanipant, where pitfalls aie always open, where expenses are high, and w licie those children have oppot Utility to learn a thousand moie things than Is good for them? Logan is a quiet, orderly town, free from vice, a teligious, moral city where students have no opportunity to come under any Influence that Is not elevating lather than debasing. It Is an Ideal location for a tlrst-cla'-s school, and wc have It liuiis. Will the people peimlt their icprcsentatives to vote for any piopositlon looking to the curtailment curtail-ment of this school, the taking away of many of Its courses, thus forcing the students to go to Salt Lake? Will the legislators consider such a move as this? God foibld, for they must re-gtct re-gtct it all their lives. |
