Show Newton's Anniversary. On Wednesday the good people of Newton celebrated the 31th anniversary anniver-sary of the settlement of that town In its present location. At 11 o'clock a. m. tho citizens met in the meeting house in a grand reunion. Tho house was appropriately decorated and everything every-thing In such perfect harmony that It was Impossible to not havo a good ttmo. A special programmo had been prepared for tho occasion and was rendered In a delightful manner. The opening address, or addresses of welcome, wel-come, was made by J. E. Grltlin, who in a happy strain made everyone fcol comfortable and at home. "Tho Founding of Newton" by Win. F. Rig- by proved mil or reminiscences anil carried the old settlers back many years to the happy times of their earlier youth. Following these' two gentlemen, a program of speeches, songs and Instrumental music was rendered to the pleasure of everyone present. Of course the big dinner was on hand that's never left out at gatherings of this kind, and that It was heartily partaken of and as thoroughly enjoyed need not to bo added. There was everything that is good, and some that was better, and more too. After dinner the children held full sway and were permitted and assisted to enjoy a pleasant afternoon. In tlio evening there was a dance, participated in by a large number. The Smlthlleld orchestra or-chestra furnished good music. |
