Much intorcst has been aroused by tho announcement. ' ns tho rosult of a prolonged series of experiments, of a method of so treating treat-ing timber as to socuro even from soft wood a largely Increased toughness tough-ness and hardhess. Tho treatment to which tho timber is subjected is, roughly speaking, that of saturation at boiling point with a solution of sugar, tho water being afterward ovaporatod at a high temperature. Tho result Is to Icavo tho pores and Interstices of tho wood filled In with solid matter and tho timber vulcanized, vulcan-ized, preserved nnd seasoned. Tho na-turo na-turo of moderately soft wood, it is claimed, Is in this way changed to a tough and hard substanco, without hrittloncss, nnd also without any tendency ten-dency to spilt or crack. |
