Show PART OF TRAIN GOES INTO RIVER Engine and Rear Sleeper of Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania No. 3 Plunge Into Waters Of Mad River Bellefonlalne, O., March 23. The engine and rear sleeping car of north bound Pennsylvania tram No. 3, plunged Into tho Mad river at the e'dgo of West Liberty early today, but the slopping car fell at tho side of tho stream and tho passengers crawled through the windows and waded to shore. Tho other six coaches coach-es of tho train remained on the rails. Heavy1 rains havo swollen the river until tho brldgo was Bwcpt away. Just as the train arrived. Tho train was being detoured over the Big Four railroad from Urbana to Bellefontalno becauso of washouts on tho Pennsylvania lines and was proceeding cautiously. Conductor Philip Hamm of Springfield, Spring-field, was swept off the front of tho engine Into tho river, but landed on a brldgo down stream. Engineer James Wood and Fireman C. E. Chilton, who Jumped after setting the brakes, wero slightly Injured. WaBhoutB on each side of tho ruined brldgo prevented Immediate aid reaching tho train. Inhabitants of Wost Liberty tried to reach tho train by boat, but tho current was too swift. For nearly a quarter of a mile behind tho train tho river has risen over tho surface of the tracks. |
