Jno l lu of ot the drainage system tern tem subsoil data dat etc The Tha summer summer summet sum sum- mer met brought mo me much er- er In m dr drainage engineering With the approach ch of or fall faU came th the q question as to how to get to Cornell University You Tou probably knew w that I havo have been upon spending spending- this winter there Our Oar trip wan WaR vor very vory pleasant The le of ot the trip were few v and far between and th the pleasures were ml mighty clo close o together Vo Wo left Salt Lake Lako tt Ilbo the tho Fourth of ot ber bar and took 14 days day to reach while White O on tho the road we visited Omaha Chicago Cleveland Buffalo Niagara Fa Falls II s. s Rochester and a a. good many other places We followed the Lincoln Highway Highway High High- way from Salt Lako to a small town In western Ohio Thero There wo we branched oft off to the north going to a a. town to called Sandusky which Is on tho shore of oC Lake Lak Erie Eric and la is about abou a n. half hate days day's drive vest west of Cleveland Cleoland From Sandusky y tho the road wo we took follows s tho the shore of Lake Lako Erie ErS to Buffalo It Is a beautiful drive form Sandusky to Buffalo Fo For a n. greater part o of th the th way the road Is within two or throe three hundred 1 feet let 0 of or the tho lake and often I It goes rJ right ht along th the tho shore All of ot the road as you rou found out last summer Is paved through Illinois Illi XIII- note nois quite a a. large amount Is Js paved through Indiana After leaving In Indiana In- In diana going practically all of ot tho ilo I yo ro road Is s eIther cither paved or has a ii rn surface or of some kind Nearly all of the troubles of ot our trip were over ovel after passing through Iowa no spent half a day at Niagara Falls It was Saturday afternoon and then from Crom there thero came directly to Saturday afternoon all of or the power plants nt t Niagara nr are ara closed to visitors At that time I did not havo have a great opportunity to visit the hydro electric development de there thele but I did havo 11 this unity to do so 30 Inter Cornell Is an old fashioned sort of at a place My first tint Impression was one of disappointment for tor It did not seem scent as largo Jargo as I had expected It to be This was modified however when I had an n opportunity to s see Reo o ju Just t. t what thero there Is here The Tho buildIngs buildings build build- ings do not make mako much of oC an lm irn at first but one ono com comes s to I realize that the they are really vory very I lars largo and are arc ver very satisfactory for their purposes Most Mot of ot tho the built build ings lags are aro old and an are badly out of ot date dato as ae tar far as architecture and accommodations accommodations ac ac- ac- ac are arc ro concerned but those In char charge o of ot the classes and laboratories which must be con oon- ducted In them are arc making a valiant effort to make mak them a an a satisfactory as 5 possible by temporary remodel- remodel Ings inge Ss adding of new equipment and fittings etc This has kept up the vor Very vory high standard whIch has ai al ways been set by Cornell The newer new new- er or buildings are models of ot convenIence conven conven- though In them too there thore ha hag ha been no lavish h expenditure o or of money The new chemistry build build- In ing which Is now under construction and Is 18 early completed in is probably the largest and best building on tho the campus and is said to bo be as aa good a building fur for tho the purpose as there Is anywhere The attitude taken here bore toward graduato students student IB is very satisfactory tory lory to those taking taking- advanced work My experience h has been that we are ale given ever every consideration one ono would ask for tor The professors are ver very kind and willing willingto to help and those In charge of or laboratories and apparatus ap ap- ap- ap In general are quite liberal with their charges These kIndne kind kind- ne nesses es are not extended to many mapy others than graduate graduato student Tho The In instructor hero here seem to consider the thA undergrad and particularly particular the tho lower class dais m men n as not deserving of an any at all 11 Students are arc fined tined fits IVA f rn n i. i 1 w fc o p 4 5 1 I day I y CI these e holidays e J I h hope Pe that th things at at the I U never Sot got In such a state of ot affairs I. I I 15 Under graduates are not allowed In tho the stack rooms of ot the library This is Js Is perhaps Justified for tor there are many rare and valuable books In the stacks which it would not bo be pos pos- ethic Ible to replace If they were to ho bo lost However It Is a a. great help to any am one who J IK Is really studying a subject to go Into the book stacks and look over all of oC the books and find Just what he wants A smaller library and one which has In It books which are arc ro not no so valuable but which are more readily would be better hetter I think the than n I v. v I complete library which is c ble bic Graduate students students' are arc permitted permit permit- ted to enter the stacks At Cornell school Is divided Into two semesters Last semester my work was mostly class work worl In the civil engineering college Hydraulic engineering In the Iho C.
