Show Rubber Plant Oil for Umbrellas. A vegetable oil used In making po-por po-por umbrellas In Japan Is pressed out of tho seeds of the rubber plant. This oil Is made In the various Islands famed for oil and seeds from these plants. Sandy ground Is favored for tho cultivation of the plant, and the oil Is extracted from tho boeds by presses. The yield of seeds Is estimated esti-mated at 20 bushels por acre. The annual an-nual production throughout Japan amounts to 850,000 bushels, from which over a gallon of oil per buBhe'l Is extracted. Tho oil beforo It Is used is boiled and then cooled until It can bo applied by hand to umbrellas with a piece of cloth or wasto. No machinery or tools aro usod In applying apply-ing the oil. When tho oiling Is complete com-plete the umbrellas are exposed in tho sun for about five hours. This oil Is also usod In making the Japanese lanterns, artificial leather, printing ink, laquer, varnishes, oil paper, and paints, |
