So many Instances have been found In tho past, und especially during this year, whero a convicted felon leaves a family unprovided for that tho matter of supplying some remedy reme-dy for this has been earnestly discussed. dis-cussed. A plan Is being mado providing pro-viding that tho convict shall bo credited cred-ited with small payment for his labor, la-bor, tho money to bo used for tho support of his family. Tho convict's work comes Into competition wltll no other labor, therefore, tho matter of payment may not cause opposition In the legislature Attorney General A. II. Darncs. who Is working for this movement, says: "It Is not a matter of paying convicts; it is a matter of staying olt starvation from their Innocent dependents. de-pendents. I havo seen tho result of tho present prison system quite of- I ten recently enough to realize that when a man Is sentenced for a crime his family is also sentenced to starvation. star-vation. There Is nothing now about this Idea; it is world wide; bat thtVe havo been many cases where a guilty man Is let off. practically because his family would bo helpless. A guilty man should not bo let off. Therefore, There-fore, let us havo some way to provldo for his family. If we mado tho man work and gave the fruits of his labor not to him but to his family the end of Justice would be attained and tho man's dependents would not havo to be state or county charges." |
