Show HAS DEMOCRACY QUIT? Democracy, the cure-all, the all knowing, the "untcrrlfled," sas the city Is bad off financially, and while Democracy has the men who have the ability to straighten out all the difficulty diffi-culty In a minute or two, they propose pro-pose to "lay down" this time and force the election of the Republican ticket. They virtually say: "The city Is In a terrible extremity and we are the only people who can save the city from bankruptcy and ill repute, but we are not going to do that. We prefer to lay down, withhold our assistance at this terrible crisis and let the G. O. P. carry the city on to Its destruction." Isn't that a noble attitude? Could they really feel tills way if thev ao tually saw any such condition as they Insist exists? The Democrats are so consistent. They want the city saved, and claim at each election that they are the only people who can save It, but this time they are going to "lay down" and not try to save it. The dems ought to cheer up and be willing to accept the government of the city at the beginning of next year. They oughtn't to fear a condition that Is no woiso than that which confronted con-fronted tne Republican administration administra-tion when it took the reins from the Democrats a few years ago. The day the Republicans assumed control there wasn't a red cent In the city treasury the dems had spent it all and all next year the city's business was carried car-ried on without funds. The condition In 1008 cannot bo much worse than that anyway. Cheer updcmmV'sand get In the race but while wo offer this cheer, Republicans shouldn't count on them not being in the game when election time comes round. If "the people's vengeance" means the keeping of Democracy from gaining gain-ing control of thls'clty, as the Journal Infers, then Indeed Is vengeance sweet to the people. "Old woman," eh? Since when, little boy Blue? The Journal man seems unduly alarmed at tho possibility of the tern-peranco tern-peranco people gaining control of the city. Needn't mind, boys, there'll still be places, dontcher know. |
