Show UTILIZING POWER OF TIDE8. Difficulties In Way of Project Will All Be Overcome. Tho difficulties ot concentrating tidal tid-al power and making It avatlnblo are great and so far It has been used only on a small scale and in a prlmltlvo way, but tho near future will probably see great electric generating plants established at favorable localities where the tides run high and there aro natural storage basins. Some months ago a plan was, worked out for utilizing utiliz-ing the ebb nnd flow of tho River Seine. Assuming that tidal embankments embank-ments were needed for guiding the channel through tho estuary It was proposed that these bo connected to the shore on either sldo so as to form two largo reservoirs, each of which Bhould be divided Into a htgh waller basin and a low water basin, tho dlschnrgo from ono to tho other to drlvo turbines. Tho available tide is about 10 feet. Each reservoir would havo an area ot about 2,500 acres, and it wns estimated that about 6,000-horscpowcr would bo given off during the six hours of tho rising tide. Tho cost of division dams, turbines and other works was placed at JG0,-000. JG0,-000. From this tho annual cost ot each j horsepower was computed at $8.00, Including In-cluding land rent and Interest at to per cent., but this would rlso to more than 130.00 If tho channel walls were to form a part of the expense. |
