Show SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF J. N. HANSEN Postmaster of Newton who died Lately. Man who worked his way Successfully. The following Is a life history of the Into. I. N. Hansen, of Newton, one of the best men In the county. His many fi lends will no doubt read the particulars of his life with pleasure. The. writer who signs himself "N. H. says: Jens Nielsen Hansen was born at Axclholm, llolbeck unit, Denmark, June Kith, 1842. At the age of six years his mother died and he was left toiustlu Tor himself. Ho obtained a common school education, however, after which ho studied music for two yoats. During the years 18U1-II5 ho did duty hi the army of ills native country. April 20, 18tiT he married Karen Chrlstensen, who became the mother of ten children One year later he was baotl.ed Into the "Mormon" church. Ho was shortly afterwards set apart as a teacher, and labored in that capacity for a short time when he was ordained an elder and sent to preside over a branch of the church in New Zealand. He emigrated to this country in 1875 and settled in Newton, Utah. He was a member of the Newton choir from 1870 until his death. On November 13th, 1878, he married his second wife, Anna Sorcnscn, who bore him three children. During the anti-polygamy anti-polygamy raid he was forced on the "underground" where lie suffered mauy hardships. Three times ho met deputy Marshal Steele, and after conversing with him for a short time he succeeded In convincing him that lie was looking for some other man. no was finally arrested March 27,1889, and was convicted of unlawful cohabitation, cohabi-tation, 'and served ninety days In the Utah penitentiary. Ho has held un-mcrous un-mcrous ecclesiastical positions, as well as being quite prominent In politics, having three times been a delegate to state conventions, many county conventions, con-ventions, deputy assessor, postmaster at Newton, school trustee, and various other olllces. lie leaves two wives, six children and eighteen grand-children. He was engaged in Sunday School work for a long time. Nearly all residents of Newton under thirty years of age lias been In his class. lie fought the good light and kept the faith. |
