Show BATTLE WITH ROBBERS. Passenger Killed by Bandits Who Attempted At-tempted to HoJd Up Street Car. Three masked robbers attempted to hold up a car on the Lbs Angeles-Pacific electric line, running between Los Angeles and Santa Monica, about a mile west of Los Angeles Sunday night, and after a pistol duel between C. W.- Henderson, one of the passengers, passen-gers, and one of the robbers, the other two highwaymen began shooting right and left through the crowded car. One passenger was killed and three wounded. wound-ed. The robbers had placed an obstruction ob-struction on the track, which the mo-torman mo-torman saw and slowed up. The three men boarded the car, commanding the passengers to hold up their hands, and when one of them did not comply, one of the robbers fired. Henderson was seated within six feet of the point where the robber boarded the car, and, having seen the obstruction, he drew his revolver. The instant the robber fired at the other man Henderson Hender-son opened fire on him, shooting as fast as he could pull the trigger. The robber then turned his gun upon Henderson, but as he did so he waa seen to bend over and cry out as if in pain. Then, straightening up, he began shooting at the bunch of passengers pas-sengers who were huddled in the front seats. One of his bullets struck Ellis Pearson in the left leg. Henderson Hender-son continued firing, and the robber was seen to fall. While this was going on on the outside out-side of the car a tragedy was being enacted in the inside, that portion of which is fully inclosed. The two robbers rob-bers who had entered the rear door commanded the passengers to raise their hands, and most of them did so Before any attempt could be made by the robbers to search the passengers for their valuables the shooting began on the outside of the car. Then the other two robbers began shooting right and left into the crowd of passengers, pas-sengers, with the result that H A Gnswold of Manson, la., was killed CA Cunningham, Ellis Pearson and Dr. C. H. Bowers were injured |
