Show i CRUEIWREATMNT... OF RUSSIAN JEWS I HAS SHOCKED CIVILIZED WORLD J Relative to the massacre of the Jews in Russia a correspondent says: "A reliable person who visited Kishineff two days after the massacre massa-cre declares that the riots occurred on Wednesday and Thursday of the orthodox Easter week. The pretext alleged, but one that has been disproved, dis-proved, was 9 ritual murder. "In some instances revolting cruelties cruel-ties were committed upon men, women and children. One hundred and seventy-five Jews were killed outright, arA f tlio nrmiTiripri EivtV fl.ft.er- l.ers who resisted being murdered. Man? synagogues, including the great synagogue in Slennaia place, were entered en-tered (ind wrecked, the rolls of the thor iieing mutilated and desecrated in an indescribable fashion. ''These scenes of violence lasted until un-til Monday evening. Then the authorities author-ities declared they received orders to use rigor and to employ armed force to restore order. Then, as if by the influence in-fluence of 'a' magic wand, rioting ceased: the maltreatment of a Christian woman wom-an by the Jewish proprietor of a merry-go-round. What a grim merry-go-round will be the circulation of this Russian joflicial lie! "I have collected right from the spot the rea facts of the case, ignoring ignor-ing the oEclal accounts, even those not under Russian censorship, and straightening out the whole' chaotic tangle of numberless facts and rumors into one coherent chronological narrative. nar-rative. Whether America is able to take action or not, it Is well that her the spot with clothes stolen from the houses. "Things that could not' be destroyed or carried away were soaked with petroleum and burned. "The police remained inactive around the wreckers, " but arrested some Jews who tried to protect their houses and shops. The governor wired for instruction to St. Petersburg, but gave instructions at the same time that no private message should be expedited ex-pedited to St. Petersburg. "Toward 4 o'clock the slaughter be- ward succumbed to their injuries, making a total of 235 murdered. "That the outbreak was wholly anti-Semitic anti-Semitic was evident, since the Christians Chris-tians were unmolested. "Two Cossack regiments reached here on Friday from a distance. Martial Mar-tial law was proclaimed, and the soldiers sol-diers arrested several hundred rioters. Quiet was immediately established. "The Jews had fled in all directions, many of them half clad and without shoes." New York, May 20. On the steamship steam-ship Furnesia, which arrived here from Glasgow, was Abraham Wolov-nick, Wolov-nick, the first refugee to land here from Kishineff, Russia, the scene of the butchery of Jews on Easter Sunday Sun-day and on a number of occasions since that day. In an interview Wolovnick said that there had been no exaggeration in the newspaper accounts ac-counts of the anti-Semitic atrocities. "It was more frightful than I can picture to you in words," he said. "The attack came upon us suddenly. Everybody a moment before had been smiling and happy. Fathers, mothers and children had been to their respective re-spective synagogues. "As nearly as I was able to learn, the onslaught was begun by some one saying: 'Let's have a fight with the Jews.' "Straightway the cry was taken up and the massacre was begun. It was undoubtedly a prearranged affair, for, starting in the center of the city, the attack spread to all quarters with remarkable re-markable spontaneity. "In a few minutes the scene was one of bloodshed and death. Without any weapons to protect themselves, wnai naa-ine nussiuii suicuimcui done? "It has granted a beggarly 5,000 roubles rou-bles from the Jewish fund of bochin Shor, the tax on Koscher meat, for the unhappy survivors, and the-chief the-chief of police of Kischineff had announced an-nounced that pillagers who restore stolen property within two days will not be punished. Could there be any better proof that the Russian government govern-ment treats the Jews as a people outside out-side the law? I note that the governor gover-nor of Kischineff says he asked for instructions on Sunday at 4 o'clock, and received them from St. Petersburg on . Monday evening. If so, Minister .Plehwe delayed his answer twenty-four twenty-four hours, and if this is the truth,, the Russian government indirectly provoked the massacre of the Jews by treating the Jews as pariahs. Ther Christian president of the chamber of artisans has declared in an official: speech that they could not blame the brigands, because they believed they were acting in conformity with orders, from St. Petersburg." Dispatches from Philadelphia relative rela-tive to the atrocities are as follows: That the Russian government gave-full gave-full consent to the ruthless and barbarous bar-barous killing of the Jews in Kischineff, Kischi-neff, Bessarabia, is the charge made; by Jews in this city. The police admonished the ruffians, but did nothing to punish them. Encouraged by such unexpected forbearance by the Russian police, not only the gamins but the Russian workmen work-men commenced to assemble, with cries of 'Catch the Jews.' "In this crowd "ere seen, besides the people attacked had to flee for their lives, but as you know, all were not successful. When I left sixty-eight were dead in the streets, while, I believe, be-lieve, others were lying in cellars , vheie they had" been' sufprised and murdered. "The scene was horrible men, women and children were attacked and their bodies dismembered. I saw a number of limbs lying about the streets. Not content with spreading death on every side, those who waged war against us rushed into' the synagogues syna-gogues and destroyed everything they could find. In addition homes were entered and all our furniture was smashed. "There was no protection to us by the police or soldiers. The police were content to stand by and see the scene of havoc and death, and no soldiers were permitted to come to our aid. Thousands of Hebrews found refuge in the home of Christians, who gave them shelter at the risk of their own lives." gan. Jewish houses were entered; the mob demanded all the money and jewels of the occupants. Afterward the men were battered to death with bludgeons, and the women, after being be-ing tortured, received similar treatment. treat-ment. Children were taken to the top floors to be thrown from the windows to the ground. "The police not only did not protect the Jews, but guided the mob to the Jewish houses, because in several cases Christian houses had been attacked at-tacked by mistake. "Toward evening the barbarism reached its apogee. The robbers cut , the throats of a few Jews and soaked pieces of linen in the blood. This crimsoned linen was then attached to canes to make flags. Other brigands ripped men open and stuffed the corpses with feather bedding. "Another party made a specialty of crucifying the Jews, driving large nails through their feet and hands. The merchant .Galauter defended his children with a revolver, ,but was soon overpowered by a mob, who tore out his eyes and tongue. the workmen, smail merchants, artisans, arti-sans, theological students, and even civil servants in uniform. Most of the crowd wore red shirts. The leaders were two representatives of the professional pro-fessional class named Possargewski and Semigradow. "Early in ithe afternoon the crowd dispersed, small parties going in different dif-ferent directions. Then a terrible pillage pil-lage began, i Armed with bludgeons, axes and bars of iron, the wreckers battered the doors of the Jewish houses and shops. Furniture was smashed, bedding destroyed and merchandise mer-chandise carried off. Nearly all the robbers attired themselves anew on ernment. The paper is addressed to the governor of Kischineff and is dated April 5, two weeks before the atrocities began. It reads as follows: "The government is informed that a movement is contemplated to attack the Jews in Kischineff. The minister of the interior desires that the governor gover-nor should try, if possible, to prevent this. However, the governor is requested re-quested not tr use force against any attacking party." The dispatch conveying this information infor-mation from Rome adds that this communication com-munication is practically an order to the governor of Kischineff restraining him from interfering in the massa- Zangwill's Story of the Massacre. A vivid and thrilling description of the Kischineff massacre was given by the celebrated author, Israel Zangwill, to a London correspondent of the New York Evening Journal. He said: "The Dark Ages have returned. The news from Kischineff puts back the clock of European time, which already is slow enough in Russia. The Middle Ages are outdone and the worst massacres massa-cres even of the mediaeval Ghettoes have been surpassed in Bessarabia. "The Russian official account tells us that the Kischineff riots began with cres, and it is evident that the duration dura-tion of the attacks for three consecutive consecu-tive days was not the fault of the governor gov-ernor of Kischineff but a compliance with orders which he could not ignore. This is further illustrated by the fact . that on the third day he received orders or-ders from St.- Petersburg to quell the riots. Philadelphia Jews familiar with conditions con-ditions say that the Russian government govern-ment is in sympathy with the anti-Semites anti-Semites is seen in the fact that now, when the condition of the Jews in that country is so inexpressibly deplorable, de-plorable, hundreds of Jewish families in places like Kieff have been ordered to leave their homes and return to the Jewish pale. This entails hardships of the most heartrending description. The Jews who own property are compelled com-pelled to sacrifice their possessions for next to nothing, as the Russians know that they are compellec". to go and that . they cannot take their property with them. "A well-known Jewess sought to defend de-fend herself by throwing hot water on her assailants, but was dragged into the street with her child, and both were bludgeoned to death. "What did the soldiers and police do? "In Gastinaio street an officer met the robbers, laden with loot from .the Jewish shops, told them to drop their booty and rifle a Jewish shop nearby. The police showed the mob those Jewish Jew-ish shops whose owners had escaped by displaying Christian images in the windows. The Jewish inmates of these houses were crucified, while the soldiers and police formed circles in which Jews were battered to death. "In Armianskaia and Kchazalam-piewskaia Kchazalam-piewskaia streets the soldiers and police po-lice took a large share in the pillage. Two under officers tortured a Jewess in the presence of their soldiers and murdered her afterward. "And the great public society, what is it doing? Society promenaded or drove through the city to gaze at the interesting spectacle, -and many of the Russian aristocracy incited the mob. This was the case during the attack on the jewelry shop of Atowsky. Some Russians, it is true, tried to save the Jews. "With fiendish energy the brigands devastated the synagogues, the keep- I 1 |
