Show Hletorj of Chautauqua System. The Chautauqua system of summer , education was inaugurated in 1874. Its orginators were Lewis Miller, of Ak- .-u, mo nev. jonn ii. Vincent now a bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Epis-copal hurch. These gentlemen, in August, 1873, selected a site for a summer sum-mer school on the northern shore of Chantauqua lake. Here an attractive city of more than 500 artistic and attractive at-tractive cottages has been built. There Is a well-equipped hotel and various buildings for public exercises, lectures and recitations. The first assembly began on the first Tuesday in August, 1874, and lasted three weeks. Since-then Since-then an assembly has been held every year. The Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle was originated in 1878, wid comprises a system of home reading read-ing circles, whose members pursue courses of reading laid out by the officers of-ficers in books and masazine articles approved by the board of counselors. The total enrollment of the C. L. S. C. since its organization has been more than 230.000, over 9,000 local reading circles have been organized in that time, and the present number of readers read-ers is fully 25,000. |
