Show MONTANA MAN LYNCHED FOR OUTRAGING GIRL Two Hundred Masked Men Take Accusec From Helena Jail and Hang Him to a Telegraph Pole. James Edward Brady, charged with committing a brutal assault upon five-year-old Ida Pugsley in Helena Monday was taken from the jail at Helena by s mob and haDged to a telegraph pole in the Haymarket square, about three blocks from the jail, at 1:30 Wednesday morning. The crowd was orderly and after the man had been hanged it quietly dispersed. There were about 200 men engaged in the affair and they were all masked. They attacked the jail door with a battering ram and it soon yielded. On gaining admittance they demanded the keys of the jailer at the point of a gun, and threatened if he did not yield the man up they would kill him. The jailer then got the man out of his cell and he was given to the mob. The march to the hanging place was quiet Brady was given a chance to say a word. He declared that they had the wrong man, although he had been positively identified by his victim and a score of other people who had seen him with the child. He also asked that some money that was due him from the Montana Central railroad be sent to a niece, and then he was pulled up. Brady, who is an ex-convict, is charged with enticing away and as- aauiLiug nazei rugsley, aged ft years. The child was missing for five hours and when she returned, told her mother a terrible story of suffering. The man took the child riding on a street car to the country and returned to town with her after the lapse of several hours' ann then sent her home. |
