Show DOCTORS IN MADAGASCAR. The French Are Establishing Free Dispensary Dis-pensary Service Throughout the Island. The French have just begun to carry out a great work of humanity in Madagascar. Mad-agascar. Medical missionaries were until recently the only doctors in the island. The governor general several years ago established a school of medicine med-icine and a hospital at the capital. The medical school has already turned out fifteen native physicians who have proved themselves competent to practice prac-tice medicine. . With his white medical medi-cal staff and the intelligent natives who are being trained to practice medicine, med-icine, the governor general now expects ex-pects widely to extend the service. , He has therefore decreed that all ' branches of the medical service in the island shall be consolidated in one organization or-ganization and that hospitals similar to that in Antananarivo, where 125, sick persons may be accommodated at one time, and where free medical service ser-vice is dispensed to applicants num-. , bering 100 to 150 a day, shall be es-; tablished in the larger towns. Many natives trained for medical service will travel from one village to another distributing medicines and treating the ill. Particular attention will be given , to the care of children, as the mortality mor-tality among infants is actually 40 per cent of the total deaths. Pamphlets are how being printed in the Malagasy language giving rules of hygiene. It is, hoped that the measures meas-ures which are being taken to improve the health of the population, which now numbers only 2,500,000. The gov- , ernor general says that in a half century cen-tury the population of Madagascar should he doubled. |
