No hopo is held for the recovery of Sergonnt Pierce. An X-ray picture taken of tho wound nt tho hospital convinced tho physicians that an op-oratlojjq op-oratlojjq to removo tho bullet would be hopeless. Tho bullet ontored his loft sldo, went through tho spinal column nnd lodged in tho lung abovo tho liver. Tho lower part of his body Is paralyzed, paralyz-ed, and ho has suffered greatly from loss of blood. Robert Kelly and Herbert Mlddloton, both apparently about 25 years ot age, woro arrested as alloged suspects In connoctlon with tho shooting of Sergeant Ser-geant N. P. Pierce and tho beating of Patrolman Goorgo F. Watson. Patrolman Watson doclarod both Kelly nnd Mlddloton closely resembled tho thugs who murdorously nssaultcd Sergeant Plorco and himself when a pollco guard accompanied tho two suspects sus-pects to Watson's home. Tho shooting of Sorgcant Plorco terminated nn evening of torror to Salt Lako peoplo, several holdups woro roportod to tho pollco and numerous num-erous residences woro entered during tho evening. |
