Show THE LIGHTNING OF VESUVIUS. ' Ampng the remnrkable phenomena connected with the grent eruption of ( Vesuvius in April, 1900, Frof. Mat- . toucci, in n recent report to tho Itnl- ' ian (Geological society, mentions the ( electric discharges in tho huge column col-umn of smoke, gas and 6toam that ( rose, swaying with tho wind, thou- , sands of feet abovo tho crater. Many discharges took placo between the column of smoko and the 9rth, and tlu-hP am described as having been of ' extraordinary intensity. Tho great- est measured height of the column during the eruption was about 42,- I 000 foot, or in round numbers eight miles. Philadelphia Press. |
