A special from Manila says: Information has been received here that satisfactory results havo attended the movement among members of the volunteer regiments In Manila for the establishment of a large American colony In tho Philippines. Foar -thousand of the volunteers now In tho Island aro reported to have Ignod a petition to the presldont and secretary of war praying they receive their discharges in Manila, Instead of at tho places of enlistment, and they bo allowed travel pay to the places of enlistment. It was explained that they believed tho Phlllpptno Islanda "offered rare opportunities for Industrious Indus-trious and enterprising Americans to make for themselves homes," and that they desired to remain, "for the purpose pur-pose of taking part In the development of the mining, agricultural and Industrial Indus-trial resources of the Islands." Tho petition stated that In tho event of favorable action by tho government those signing It pledged their united support In upholding tho laws and protecting tho Interests of the United States there and would, If so desired, become members of a national guard or soma such other organization as might be necessary for tho best pro-tootlon pro-tootlon of American Interests In the Philippines. |
