Show SAFETY V VALVE The Utah Preps Our State University is practically the head of the educational system in Utah and since the Secondary Training Training Training Train Train- ing school is a part of that institution it should be a model high school in every way Yet in only one of Its aspects as as- that that of scholarship and instruction tion tion-is tion is it a high school in any sense for as far as athletics dramatics or social affairs are concerned it does not exist With few exceptions the students who attend the Secondary Training school are among the best that the state produces they are here hereon on scholarships and a scholarship represents all the perseverance and effort attendant upon victory A few have been admitted by the special permission of the president All complete complete complete com com- the same amount of or work and do it fully as well and often in less time as any other high school student student student stu stu- dent in the state At the close of ot othis his preparatory career the Prep has no commencement exercises given in his honor he does not even receive receive receive re re- re- re the certificate of graduation to which he surely is entitled but simply simp simp- ly passes on or on-or or out Since this Is a serious handicap to the student who intends to complete completo his education in another stat state the fourth year or senior class decided during the term 1915 16 to petition for a diploma in order that its members members members mem mem- bers would not be required to take entrance examinations at the universities universities universities in which they hoped to register The petition was accordingly drawn up up-no up no commencement exercises were desired merely the certificate hand certificate hand handed ed to the principal and no more was heard of the affair On looking Into the matter at the beginning of this term they found that the petition was not even brought before the faculty Three years ago the tho boys of the Secondary Training school after a great deal of time and effort suc sue in having the Preps admitted to the State Basketball league Although Although Although Al Al- though small in number our men were very good players and with proper training coaching practice and anda a little encouragement they could have been made a team of which any high school might be proud There was no place for them to practice the gymnasium being denied them they had no coach and what training they had they got for themselves There could be but one result result result-a a succession succession succession suc suc- cession of defeats and the Invaluable invaluable invaluable able if unpleasant experience for the tile entire school of realizing what it means to be a state Joke At the present time there is not so much as asan asan asan an athletic tendency in the Secondary Training school In social and dramatic circles the Preps do not even cast a shadow I have vainly searched the files of the Chronicle for a single trace of any dramatic attempt but It Is rumored rumored rumored ru ru- mored that long ago it was customary for the Preps to entertain at an annual ball The custom must have i completely died out years ago for any such attempt made latel lately has resulted re reo suited in a reception for the tho orchestra orchestra orchestra orches orches- tra and a big duet As a part of the University of Utah the Secondary Training school Is a disgrace to the college it could not pass as a high school in any way other way than that of mere scholar scholar- ship And since the Preps are at least equal in mentality to other high school students the tho fault must lie He partially at best with the administration tion in charge and to a great extent In a n marked disinterestedness and lack of or encouragement on the part of the entire University MABEL RUBEN 20 |
