Owing to the effects ot shore-lines, and other Influences which are more or less obscure, It Is very difficult to account tor the peculiarities exhibited by tidal waves In various parts of the world, Interfering waves cause onoe-a-day tides at Tahiti, and in some other places, whllo on the other hand, In the harbors back ot the Islo of Wight, and in tho Tay In Scotland, there are three tides In a day. The latter bavo roccntly been ascribed to "overtides," produced by tho modification modifica-tion ot tidal waves running ashore, and resembling tho "overtones" of musical sounds. |
