Show B j Ex-Governor Waite of Colo- B rado, a noted populist who gained B notoriety by his "bleod-tothe- B bridles" speech, has been talking B for publication and has this to say B about Utah and her Women's H Suffrage: "Take Utah. They B have had municipal suffrage there B J for thirty years, but so far as H results are concerned they might H ' just as well never have had it. H Today there is almost as much B polygamy in Utah as there ever H -was, only now it is conducted H more or less secretly. The mir- B riages are celebrated in private H and the new wives recognized H . openly only among the Mormons H , themselves. And yet the women H i,' there have been in full enjoyment H of suffrage and could have done H much towards discountenancing H t' .the practice, if not entirely sup- B pressing it, only they have had no B X4 ' desire to do so." It shows how B some public men will wilfully H misrepresent affairs in Utah B through ignorance. We wonder hovy Roberts, Whitney and others' who made a fight for or against women's suffrage in the constitutional consti-tutional convention will regard this. |
