The expedition that sailed from here to Key West, prior to going to Santiago, was made up of noarly'20 regiments of infantry' of from 500 to 550 men each, including, -besides fpur'ragimente of artillery. The tbtal forco ot regular infantry was about U.000 oion. There were alBO two regiments regi-ments of volunteer infantry, about 2,000 men,- and two squadroons each from the F"irst, Third, Sixth, Ninth, and Tenth cavalry, about 2,000 men ; eight troops of volunteer cavalry taken from Roese-yelt's Roese-yelt's rough riders, 500 men ; four batteries bat-teries of light artillery, 400 men and 10 una; the battalion of engineers, 200 men ; signal and hospital corps, etc. about 300 men, a grand total of about 17,000 men. Tho regulars were practically picked men, as not a single recruit was taken, tho regiments carrying only tlio old seasoned troops. |
