Show Club Women Enjoy Day at University as Guests of Faculty Visitors Well Impre Impressed sed With Buildings and Equipment of University Friday was an eventful da day on the campus for the visiting representatives representatives tives lives of the Women's clubs who were the guests of the University faculty Beginning at 1 15 a delicious luncheon luncheon luncheon lunch lunch- eon was served in the mens men's gym to toone toone toone one hundred sixty-five sixty of the mem mem- bers Three long tables were attractively attractively attractively decorated in fall flowers with tall vases of sunflowers alternating with low bowls of marigolds and California California California Cali Cali- fornia poppies as center pieces The University girls did the serving under under under un un- der the management of Miss liss Van Cott who was entirely responsible for forthe forthe forthe the splendid success of the affair At three o'clock a public session was held in the Assembly room which was largely attended The meeting opened with two musical numbers Twelfth Rhapsody Listz Ivine Shields I One Fine Day from Madame Butterfly Cora Thomas After the musical numbers at the suggestion of Mrs l A. A J. J Gorham presiding presiding presiding pre pre- siding a vote of thanks s and appreciation appreciation appreciation was tendered Dr Kingsbury for courtesies extended delegates to the convention Dr Kingsbury then formally opened the meeting with an address of welcome welcome welcome wel wel- come in which he gave a brief history of the institution as well weli as an outline outline outline out out- line of the present work and the high standard which the University is maintaining as a college Miss liss Gorham Gorham Gorham Gor Gor- ham then introduced Miss Lutie E E. E Stearns of Madison Wisconsin chairman chairman chairman chair chair- man of literature and library extension department G G. G F. F W. W C. C She gave an interesting vital address on The Significance of the Modern Club Movement Miss Stearns asserted that the six great issues of the present present present pres pres- ent day were labor liquor race war women and public leisure problems She showed wherein women's clubs by concentrated efforts and earnest work might regulate and control these problems She said that women's clubs stood first for beter home conditions conditions conditions con con- for peace and honesty in political political political po po- po- po life for purity in social life life life- for broader democracy in state and nation At the conclusion of the meeting the visitors inspected the buildings Much favorable comment was expressed expressed expressed ex ex- ex- ex pressed upon the beauty and advantages advantages advantages advant advant- ages of the new Administration build build- ing All the visitors were generous in their praise of the hospitality of the University They expressed their pleasure at having the opportunity to come in close contact with the University University University Uni Uni- and her work and promised their operation co-operation in the future |
