Show Last Sunday the following paragraph par-agraph appeared in the editorial columns of the Salt Lake Herald : "An interesting item regarding sugar beets comes from Rome, -Nr-Vi JV... aori-copondcilt fronr there writes the New York Evening Even-ing Post that the Rome sugar factory fac-tory pays $5 per ton for beets. In Germany, according to farmers' bulletin No, 52, of the department of agriculture, the price paid for sugar beets per ton (2000 pounds) s $4.64. These prices are much higher than those paid in Utah." That is an innocent looking article ar-ticle but it is very misleading. You will notice that the Herald' is very careful not to state that the Rome sugar factory receives a State bounty which more than makes up for this increase in price, hey also neglect to state that in Germany the beets are bought on a sliding scale being paid for according to their sugar contents and not at a fixed price per ton. |
