Show Seed Beets. The sugar company have had a force of men at work for several days planting tho "mother beets" which were selected for seed last fall. The test made thin spring 6bows that 75 per cent of the G7 tons etortfd are fit for eeed so they have been planted on bouie of the choicest land ihe company have to cultivate some being on the bench and Boiue in the field. These are in xcellent condition con-dition having .kept viH dm ring tho winter. They expect to plant about 120 acres which is considerable of an increase in-crease as they "only had in 13 last venr. Thfhuid where they are planted is in fine condition nnd is marked off each way as for com f.nd the boots planted just three feet apart each way. A man makes a round hole with a spade made especially for the purpose and a boy follows putting a bept in tho hole and tramping it in solid and leaving about an inch of soil above the crown of the beet. Everything points to a successful ciop of seed this year. They intend enlarging en-larging tliis part of the industty as fast as possible and it will be but a few years until seed will be shipped from here to other localities. Great credit is due Chemist Valley, for this work. When he came here he recognized that we had an ideal country for seed raising and began work at once and has succeeded so far. No country on caith is better adapted to this than is Utah. They may raise seed in warmer districts and it must be used in warmer districts also and would not dffor the colder districts, but seed raised here could be used in any part qf Aniertca and would produce good re-Td'TMHged,7rtf re-Td'TMHged,7rtf is very precarious and the supply from that course may he cut off" any time, so the sooner Americans raibe their own seed the better for ti-e industry. |
