Show ANOTHER FARMER Gives his views on the Beet question. MR. JOHN AUSTIN Tells a Banner reporter what he thinks about raisins -beets. I consider Uio beet crnp betUr than any other farm product, becauss there Js ready cash sale for the crop, and so long as the present prices prevail It can be made to pay. For ratline a large crop a good Bandy , loam 1b the best. in preparing the land deep plowing is good for beets With the kind ot land abovo mentioned it does not matter so much about the land being plowed In - the fall, still I would prefer fall plowing If the manure can be got upon the land i in time. In clayey, land by all means fall plowing should be adopted. "While the fall plowing Is not so essential in light or sandy land I think it insures a. better stand, as tho moisture of fall and winter goes down better and it is held Vetter in the spring. My idea of irrigation is that on th kind of land I speak of we ran nee al the water we can ever get in Lehi. TjM. is so very abort of water that I do net think we can well water our beets too ranch. . How about the first watering? There A (tan b no definite tlrae set. They should not be watered till the lawer lures begin to wl!t nnd the lops turn ""'t?V' , dark graen eolo'. As long as the tops t" '''" ' (how a Trk green color tho beets should not bo watered. I think they can bo stored away and kept In good condition. Wo used to Ietoro turnips in the Old Country. "X have denned them and covered them up at a very little expense. A. very good way where the land is Inclosed so that stock cannot get In, is to start n pilo In tho centre of a small plcco of ground say 12 square rods, and throw nil tho beets from this place in this piece In tills pile. Then cover the beets with straw and a ittlo dirt. There would only need to bo about a dozen piles to tli e acre. I have myself covered twenty such piles in a day, of turnips. Inovorliad nnyxpcrlcncewlth alkali land, hence 1 cannot sny anything ,? about It. 1 cannot rniso beets w Ithout manuring. Y I consider it very profitable to manuro V the land. Where land will rnlso from 10 to 12 tons of beets without manure, , jt will raise trom 14 to 16 tons by apply 1 . jng from 8 to 10 loads to the acre. Land that without manurlngwillraisu 10 totiB per acre can be made by manuring to produce 20 tons per aero. |
