Show The Uuropean countries are working hard to secure the American market for their sugar. Cuba is practically out of the light which nukes it more important to these countries for they know our market is worth millions of dollars to them. France and Germany now pay export duty and can well afford to do so when it gives employment em-ployment to so many people. If this country awakens U the fact that our sugar imports are taking millions of dollars away yearly and does something to stop it by fostering our domestic industry we can stop this terrible drain but it will mean the closing of about half the factories in Europe. We are now supporting half the beet sugar factories in Germany nnd France and should be paying the money to home institutions. We heartily agree with what the Agriculturist says: "To carry out this idea may require 'protection' that wine folks have considered such a dreadful thing in theory, but wu notice there's not a 'free, trade' country in the west or middle south but would eagerly offer every possible inducement to secure a big-beet sugar factory. That's the most direct form of 'protection,' though the people may not think so. Let's quit political theorising nnd partisanship partisan-ship and Uckle this sugar problem in u businesslike way. We want what's best for America, not what's best for Europe." This is business and not politics. |
