| Show DEBATING AND ELOCUTION The proposed transfer of varsity debating debating debating de de- bating from the department of English Eng Eng- lisp lish to the department of elocution has been the subject of considerable discussion discussion discussion dis dis- dis- dis the past week among students interested in debating g. g It is difficult for the layman to associate debating with elocution and still more difficult to understand wherein the department department department depart depart- ment of elocution can in fairness demand demand de de- mand the change suggested in view of the history of intercollegiate debating debating debating de de- de- de bating at Utah The English department or rather Professor Marshall and Professor Reynolds have been almost entirely responsible for the successful growth o of this important activity and it is perfectly natural that these men should to any change that would take debating from under tinder their super super- vision It seems logical that in an institution institution institution I tion where there exists a department of public speaking debating should be in that department but at Utah we have no department of public speaking we have a department of elocution There is a vast difference between elocution and debating and there is no method of reasoning which would justify debating as a course in elocution Another objection raised by interested interested interested inter inter- ested students and alumni men is the possibility of losing C. C W. W Snow as debating debating de- de bating coach if the proposed change were made All who Iwho have been in any anyway anyway anyway way connected with debating at Utah the past two years have come to realize realize realize real real- ize the efficiency and worth of the theman theman theman man who has directed the activity dur dur- ing lug that time Mr Snow came to Utah highly recommended and he has proved himself entirely worthy of all I the flattering things that were said about him The English department and the debating students know that it would be Ibe a difficult matter to find finda a man who could fill Mr lr Snows Snow's place I as coach of debating It is to be hoped that in considering this matter tte the regents will do so in inthe inthe inthe the light of existing conditions and will vill respect the opinion of those most vitally interested |
