Show SPOILS" OF ANCIENT EGYPT 1 , Th Oldest Piece of Sculpture in the World Recently Brought to Light. Among the spoils of the last season's campaign by Prof. W M. Flinders Petrle and his assistants of the Egypt exploration explora-tion fund Is a remarkable sculpture, probably the oldest In the world It was found at Wady Maghara. Slnal where hitherto the difficulties of maintaining a camp in the desert five days' camel Journey from Suet had prevented any serious excavation. The sculpture, which would probably not be accepted by the committee of the Hoyai academy u sent in lor exmuiuon, represents King Somerkhet-of the first dynasty smiting down a Bedawl sheik, aftervthe manner of kings about 4600 1). C. Above that is a figure of the general gen-eral who commanded the expedition. This Is by no means the most remote of the discoveries. There Is, for Instance, a collection of flints used for working turquoises out of the sandstone, probably prob-ably by the Bedouin In a period about 10,000 D. C They show several types of which the hammers, the larger scoring flakes and the small flakes with a point are the most dtstlnct. Among the most interesting relics are . the Roman objects found at Oxyrnkhos by Drs. Grenfell and Hunt. They Include-some specimens of the most beautiful beau-tiful colored glass, thearmof the Aphrodite Aphro-dite grasping Cupid, a limestone female head of remarkable type and a large collection col-lection of bone and ivory dice. Wherever Wher-ever the Roman Boldier went there are always found these primitive gaming Instruments and they are precisely the samo as those in use tr1 cv A sphinx, bearing Inscriptions in an unknown script, ex'clfts curiosity, and the presence of a good hieroglyphic Inscription In-scription as well as the sphinx shows that these were not done as Ignorant Imitations Im-itations of hieroglyphics, but that It Is n deflnlto system of writing. |
