Show Rsd Albumen. During tbo past few weeks a very plausible story has been going the rounds of tho press to the effect that a little so-called "Red Albumen'' fed to hens will make them lay eggs in abundance, abund-ance, though they refuso to respond to all the other wilts of the poultry man. 1 here, is every reason to believe that this oi tide is being largely Bold throughout through-out this State aa in other states. Drug gists report a great demand for It, and trio poultrymen should know that the thing la a fraud. It is a preparation put up in packages under the label of tho United States Salyx Co., New Concord, Con-cord, Ohio. The New York Agricultural Agricultur-al Experiment Station baa made nn analysis an-alysis of this material and has lound that "it has practically no feeding value as it contains only ons-tenth of one per cent of protein (albumon), the remainder remaind-er being almost wholly oxide of iron red paint) and sand." It.ie advertised as something which it Is not, and is therefore a fraud. Instead of it being worth 60 or 60 cents a pound, for which it is sold, it is worth only one to two cants for the red paint It contains. I It is worth nothing that this egg-producer egg-producer (1) appears on the scono at an auspicious moment. The poultryman baa been growing desperate with tggs at 80 conta n dozen and no egga. The 'red albumen" has come to his relief. In a few weeks his hens will lay well, for biddy will lay at this season of the year in spite of a little red paint In her uiajli, but as the shrewd manipulators of the scheino foresaw, tho red paint is liable to get a great deal of the credit. Albumen or protein I a veiy essential part of the ration of laying hens. It la found in all poultry footle moro or less. It can be bought in the form of dried blood at from 3 to 6 centa a pound, and it is not necessary, thereforo, to pay 60 , cents a pound for a preparation of "red 1 'albumen" which contains only one "J tenth of 1 per cent of albumen.
