Show K A friend of ours while cliacus- H sing the subject of imperialism H asked us how the church organ H the Dcseret News stood on imper- H ialism. We informed him that the H news has, expressed itself on the B subject several times in its edit- BH onala, and for the benefit of all B those who would 1!kc to read those H articles we here produce one of B July 25th, ipoo. H The "News" and Imperialism, H The Deserct News is opposed H to Imperialism as a policy for this H Republic. The principles of the B Constitution of the United States H have always been upheld by this H paper. While they arc maintained, H the liberties of all people under B the flag of our country will be as- B sured. Emergencies arc likely to B arise requiring immediate action B that may for the time being np- B ptar out of harmony with the letter B of that instrument. But it will be B found that the intent and purpose B of this nation will be in full accord H with its spirit, and that the unfurl . B ing of the Stars and Strips over B any spot on earth, means the even- H tual liberty of nil people who dwell B When there is any real danger B to the institutions that we believe B were established under divine dir- H ection, not only to secure freedom B to the people of this land, but to H promote and establish it in all the H world, the Dcseret News will H doubtless be as ready to sound a- H larm, and engage in the war n- B gainst the intended invasion upon B the domain of liberty, as any other B advocate of human rights under B the sun. But when a bugaboo is B held up to frighteirthe unsophis- B Heated, weather it bears the brand B of "Imperialism" or any other B scare-head, we do not intend to B join in the fright or aid in the de- B ccption, B Wc believe the destiny of this B great nation is to become the pol- B itical redeemer of the world. Its B work) cannot be accomplished in a B day. Nor can the full liberty B ' which some time through its influ- B ence, whether of war or of peace, B shall be enjoyed by peoples now B in bondage, be conferred upon H them "in an instant, suddenly." It 1 must be a gradual process, accord- m ing to the conditions, ., intelligence H and readiness they exhibit for its R complete benefits, But the floating H of our flag in token of sovereignty H on land or on sen, is iu itself the B promise as well as the hope and H faith of freedom to everybody be- B neath its aegis, H Men and parties may honestly B differ in their opinions, as to the B course to be pursued and the time B " to be spent in this work of human B uplifting. But the purpose will be B kept in view. And whither in B Cuba, or in Porto Rico, or in the B Philippine Islands, or in any other B place, where the powtr of the B United States shall be extended, B the effect must be the emancipa- R tion of the people from serfdom, B their preparation for liberty, and B their ultimate independence or at- B tachment to a government of their K own choosing. |
