Show THE THE FRESHMAN ATTITUDE It is almost an axiom that freshmen freshmen fresh fresh- men are an important part of every university and it also is almost an axiom that freshmen over-estimate over their importance A freshman generally enters college college col- col lege ege with several preconceived notions no DO- usually based on very vague impressions He has perhaps read somewhere or heard some unauthentic tic report of how freshmen always always take things in their own hands lands and rule an institution This I is s not true of course at all colleges nor is it true in an exaggerated sense at the University of Utah But the freshmen at Utah have one very mistaken mistaken mis- mis taken aken idea that may prove disastrous This is with regard to the relation of or the freshman class to the student body an and ana 1 particularly to the campus rul rules ules s recently formulated by ithe the A. A S. S U. U U. U executive board It should be the duty therefore of the he upper-classmen upper to put the freshmen freshmen freshmen fresh fresh- men right in this regard The upperclassmen up up- per classmen are not hostile in their attitude to ItO the freshmen They de de- sire ire to help the freshmen in every I possible way The misunderstanding on the part of the freshmen lies chiefly in fact that they do not know Inow that the decrees de crees trees of the student body are law The freshmen class has has' no right to open up a discussion in a class meeting as asto asto asto to advisability of accepting student body rules as they are are or whether the they shall amend them to suit their convenience This is what war done in a recent freshman meeting when the question of the campus rules was brought up According to a a. faculty decision a University student cannot be compelled compell compell- ed to comply wi with h the campus rules It H he is a a. moss-back moss or a a. hermit or indifferent to college tradition he may appeal to the faculty for ity However it is not within the power of any class to effect a change in m the rules as they now stand except by an appeal to the S' S student body executive executive executive ex ex- board The freshmen are for the most part willing to accept the campus rules but they are now debating whether they shall wear caps or hats harts All they may do with such an issue is to petition the board for a change in inthe inthe inthe the rules If the board refuses to consider the petition the rule must stand as it is and the freshmen are then at liberty to observe the rule in good sportsmanlike spirit or to show the other stuff the they are made ol ot |
