Show 11 CUNNINGS CUMMINGS HAS SUCCESSFUL TRIP l- l Professor Cummings and his party of archaeologists returned from their expedition into the land of the ancient cliff dwellers last week bringing with them many interesting stories of the scenic wonders of the San Juan valley The party left Salt Lake August 1st and arrived home September During their absence they traveled a total distance of over a a thousand miles four hundred of which was made with saddle horses and pack burrors and two hundred by stage coach The White canyon natural brid bridges es were visited during the early part of the trip then fording the San SanJuan SanJuan SanJuan Juan river at a point near the old Gable crossing the caravan proceeded across the Navajo reservation to S-egie S gle canyon In this canyon are situated situated situ situ- ted a some of the most wonderful specimens specimens specimens mens of cliff dwelling in existence The Twin Caves house was the one selected by Professor Cummings fo for r excavation and about two weeks was required to complete the job Th The e l house consisted of two eighty-two rooms most of which were found to be in m a a. remarkable state of preservation Numerous relics of a past civilization were found buried in the debris perhaps perhaps per per- haps the most valuable of which was wasa a black and white olla olio measuring five feet in circumference Three days were spent in visiting the house and in completing some work which had been begun last year at the Bat Woman house At the latter latter lat lat- ter a burial was uncovered which yielded a fairly well preserved skeleton skeleton skeleton ton and a wealth of stone and wood implements and ornaments Everything Everything Everything Every Every- thing of value was carried away and shipped to Salt Lake to be added to the rapidly growing collection of curios at the University museum Professor Cummings is well pleased with th the success of the trip He says it was one of the most productive expeditions expeditions expeditions ex ex- the Archaeological society has ever sent out The party consisted of twelve people three of whom were ladies |
