Show TRADITIONS FROM SOPH ISSUE With good old U U Day and its subsequent celebration and Doctor Goshen and his ill grounded lambasting ing still fresh in our minds it is only natural that in those leisure moments moments' when we are discussing student affairs affairs affairs af af- af- af fairs our conversation should drift dritt to what we are wont to call college tradition Bost Most of us mean when we say college tradition only the big letter on the hill We Ve say often and hear oft oftener ner that the U is the only tradition the University has and that it should be venerated accordingly With all due respect to the noble old monogram monogram-I I I say this despite the eloquent terms in which it is so strongly criticised around criticised-around around which so much of our present conversation is woven I am forced to disagree with the popular student opinion that the world-famed world letter is our only tion I believe that our school is vastly rich in tradition and that to say it is not is discounting some of oC those marks in its development which are worthy of as high a reverence as anything could possibly be To me the most important traditions traditions traditions of a school are those things which old alumni and students far faraway faraway away from the campus are wont to dwell upon both in conversation and reverie The big U is certainly most beautiful but it has been my experience that when far from our campus my friends discuss something which is perhaps a little more abstract abstract abstract ab ab- ab- ab but which because of that very abstractness and airiness are able to tobe tobe tobe be kept always in our hearts and minds I mean the achievements of the students individually and collectively collectively collectively and the gradual material growth of the school If it is my mother with whom I am talking of the school she is pleased to tell how she enjoyed instruction in the university when it was called the John R Park school and was very meagerly housed in a little building down in the present business dis dis- My older brother is pleased to tell of the merry times among the theold theold theold old locust trees on the campus now occupied by the Salt Lake high school My younger brother comes one period nearer and centers his fondest recollection upon the infant days of our life on the hill which we now adorn All have something different and equally interesting in the way of tradition the sum total of which makes up a history which to me should make us all exceedingly proud of our present school Not many schools have the unique background upon which the history of our school is seen nor have many enjoyed a amore amore amore more healthy and romantic develop develop- ment This then seems to me to be ample justification for the statement that we are rich in tradition To me there is one phase which is more interesting interesting interesting interest interest- ing than all others That is athletics To a great many of us athletics and football are synonymous but it is track athletics which we tie are most interested in just at present and as this branch of sport is linked with a greater period of our college history and has been successful for a greater period of time it should not be amiss to hash up some of our track tradition tion Again I say that in view of just this little part of our history it seems queer that we should now maintain that that the only tradition we have is the theU theU theU U Love the old letter all you Oll can but dont don't forget that for a little college college col col- col lege and one poor financially we have many things to point to as indicating the true worth of the students of the University of Utah both present and past |
