reclamation pushing to completion its soil Bur surveys veYs in utah ufah and continuing a series of surveys on the green and upper colorado rivers to determine possible location of dam sites for water and power development utah should know shortly whether tile colorado river great bain broj 1 ct t offers the opportunity to secure these needed resources tor f r this state this Is the comment of F P H richardson secretary of the colo rado river groat great basin vater users association following assurance from commissioner commission er john C page that both surveys are being hastened hy by his department tile the department has been active making soil surveys in our sta state for nearly gi i year mr air richardson pointed out under the direction of edwin 0 nielsen Nl elsen associate finish thas 8 survey ba 3 the end of the current year the soil survey and the survey planned on the colorado and green rivers have hava been ordered in connection with the program to determine minette mi nethe the possible developments of water and power resources tor for the benefit of the upper basin states far reaching importance we believe mr richardson said that it if there to Is a possibility of more water tor for utah ac acres besand and more power tor for utah industries we must discover it and then take Is steps to develop it many of the major developments I 1 of recent years were once thought impossible and impractical there are those who say that damming of tile the green river at for instance split mountain echo park or flaming ng gorge and conducting water to areas west vest of the wasatch mountains would be a project too bromen tromen aplis jo t t e wiltz realize 6 that afim such a project lt if U can be ba accomplished will benefit more than halt half our counties directly and the entire state indirectly I 1 feel that chati we dwelt owe it to ourselves to flud out oui it I 1 f such a plan can be put into ac action i on appa apparently r antly the bureau of reclamation cla mation agrees with the association tor for the survey work already la is assured the entire reaches of the green and upper colorado rivers are to be explored for water and power possibilities the soil soll survey work now under way throughout the state under mr air nielsene Niel sens direction is of tar far reach lug importance mr air richardson pointed out through this survey the amount of irrigable land which benefit deot from fa such buell a project will be determined es AteS the lie inel in tills this classification In catlon at hiatky egdal to the area now under ter irrigation in tho III state this alone mr Itle son saidi presents an ail idea ot of the bomont such buell a project would bring brine our state with tho the western we stern states constantly V increasing in III population liere 1 will continue to be an ail increasing market tor for agricultural products grown ili tile ane west the only yay ay we ran cah produce more goods rani the farms farm Is 18 to increase the acreage on oil which they can be produced great importance under mr ail direction approximately inen alen were engaged ju jn making snaking soil sell surveys last summer it la Is understood that a similar fa force ree will be ba placed in the field in nn aa attempt to complete this work jn ili addition to this survey reconnaissance nall sance surveys have been conducted to determine probable routes for bringing water from the colorado river niver basin to utah acres preliminary lines tor for instance have been run to two ot of tho the discussed dam sites one of these la Is at echo park at the colorado utah line another Is at minnie maud where pie ilie orcen green river separates carbon carb on and uintah counties rhe geology of the Possible tunnel sites through the wasatch range has hag been studied the foundation possibilities of the various dam sites have been and ar are e being explored with drill rigs and the capacity of 0 the various reservoirs la Is being determined the history of the tha streams flow since records have been kept Is s being plotted to determine the tha amount of storage needed to assure an ample water supply our association Is pleased that the bureau pureau of 0 reclamation Is going forward 0 ward wl with h this work mr richardson chard Bon said representatives ta 10 irrigation committee as well agthe as the entire utah congressional congress lon delegation have done a consistently f tine tic job in congress to help push this th I 1 s work along mr air richardson also expressed the hope that all citizens of the state of 0 utah would realize rea lizo the tremendous importance ot of such buell a project to them in my mind this without a question of doubt would bo be tile tho greatest single factor in permanent growth that co could u id over ever hippen happen he said 1 I sincerely el y hope that the surveys will vill prove the projects economically feasible it if they do utah must assure itself that it can and will protect its rights to tile the water of the upper colorado river basin necessary for this development |
