Show re registrants Sit rants deferred may be inducted now many selective service registrants who have been deterred from military service because they have dependents will eventually be inducted unless they become engaged in activities essential to the nations Nation war effort lt colonel H A rich state director of selective service declared today we are rapidly approaching approach ng tile the stage where everyone must he work ing or at fighting to win will the war director rich asserted war requirements the demand for manpower by essential Idus industries tries as well ns as the armed forces will compel many local boards within the next several months to find tees ifor for their quotas among registrants who have dependents right now local loal boards are reconsidering si all registrants with dependency deferments tor for two major purposes the first Is to eliminate from this class clas sall all men who cannot prove that their dependents need their earned income tor for support in a rea lea manner and all who cannot prove that they did not acquire de pen dents to avoid military service the second purpose to Is to distinguish between men who have dependents but are not engaged in activities aiding the nation Na tlona 8 war effort and those who are arc contributing tor for victory by their work as civilians civil lans by making thle distinction between those engaged in essential ac tivi ties and those whose civilian occupations cupat u ions are arc not contributing to the th war effort it t to Is desired to induce a vo voluntary movement of the latter into essential activities and thus to release for military service men without dependents who must be deterred as necessary men until they can be replaced at their work persons engaged in nonessential activities however should not cease their present employment until their services are needed in some essential activity the director warned this voluntary movement from nonessential to essential activities should be gradual orderly and economically no sound transfer of mandow er the federal government will make known from time to time the opportunities for training and cm am in activities essential to the war effort so ao that this shift of employment may be mado made without un necessary disturbance to the welfare of the edin the family and the individual each individual registrant knows or into his own capabilities and the opportunities for employment in war industry and should seek employment without waiting tor for specific instructions from the government when men with dependents are considered tor for military service the director emphasized local boards will have regard tor for occupation together with the degree of dependency Regis registrants wild who have the irea greatest test degree of dependency such as a dependent wife and children will be the last group sought for military tary service he said I 1 provided that they have become n necessary ec essary or supporting activities |
