Show DEBATING Thursday evening at half past seven in Room of the Boston Building the tryouts for the Varsity debating team against Oregon will b be held The team will consist of two men and an an alternate The question as framed by Coa Coach h Duddy for the tryout is Resolved that the tho State Constitutions should be amended to provi provide e for the recall of judges Speeches will be limited limited limited lim lim- to six minutes and the contestants will be given the opportunity of choosing any phase of the subject they desire The order of speeches is to be determined by lot on the evening of the tryout It will be expected however that the theman theman theman man who makes makes' the opening speech will devote 10 at at least two the history of the ques ques- tion and nd the definition of terms For this purpose purpose pur pur- pose his time will be extended to eight minutes The judges who will pick the team are to be chosen by the contestants themselves The Manager Manager Man Man- ager of Debating has called a meeting for Monday Monday Monday Mon Mon- day at 12 1230 30 in in which the men entered for the tryout will decide on the judges It is urged that all who intend going into the contest attend this meeting Already eleven men have signed up Th There re is no reason why at least twenty men 1 should not pot try for the Ore Oregon on team The debate with Oregon last year was the hardest fought of any in the schedule and ami the decision was in doubt until the last minute This year Utah must confront the additional difficulty of debating away from home and also on a question about which the Oregonians have a very decided opinion ion the ion the recall of judges For these reasons we must send the very best material we have against our rivals in the north and such material can be obtained only when a large number of men enter the tryouts The University of Colorado had fifty men out to try for positions on her debating teams and Utah has no excuse for making a poorer showing than this Every man has haa as much chance of making the team as any other The whole thing is to be decided decided decided de de- only on the merits of the contestants so a Freshman providing he shows himself competent competent competent com com- is just as likely to succeed as a Senior Also for Freshmen there is this additional inducement induce induce- ment ment-if ment if they fail to make malre the team they have that much more practice for succeeding trials trial'S and if they do win a place on the Varsity there is isa isa isa a chance to serve four years T There ere seems to tobe tobe tobe be a greater interest t in debating this year than ever before and it is hoped that the tle first tryout will be so successful as to increase this sentiment sentiment sentiment senti senti- ment materially |
