Show LIVESTOCK MEN OPPOSE CEDAR BREAKS ROAD the national park service desires to create a national park at cedar breaks with an area of eighty three square miles according to a letter from director horace M albright to the office of the chief forester in washington D 0 a copy of 0 which has teen been received by the supervisor in cedar city A map of the abea aiea area la Is attached with a proposal to discuss the transfer to the parks service when congress meets next winter when the move to make the breaks a national park was first started it wis was thought that only a small area around the breaks would be taken and it would affect the grazing rights of only a a few sheep men but the present plan would have a much greater effect on the livestock industry of tho the country instead of taking oft off about one herd berd of sheep it would take up the range of possibly six herds from cedar city owner alike a like amount from parowan carowan and besides a good share of the cattle range of ce cedar dar people the area gouid extend east to the thick timber on oa uis west elj alj el J i of hancock peak and into sage valley it would include the three creeks peo tion the cedar canyon cattle district the six lakes section and the breaks proper sixty nine square miles of the area would be within tho the dixie national fo forest rest and fourteen miles mould be outside the boundaries the park area would be reserved strictly for recreational purposes and the grazing and the timber resources would not bo be available aval lable the cedar long galley i road traverses the tha area and would make it possible that the park service would charge a tee fee for crossing through the park as la is done on the zion mt carmel tunnel road the creation of a national park of th this Is size would no doubt greatly affect affe fe ct the administration of the forest service as well as tie up the ahe grazing and forest resources iron county record |
