PI I 1 sh ed in the district and as a medium through which general instructions are given all instructions should be followed by eath each hunter during the mouth month of 0 january the hunters continued to devote the major part of their time to poison work and were able to get back over some 0 of the situ situations allons that they had put out earlier in the winter practically all of the men took some jaime ime oft off during the month and together worked only an average of twenty three days each I 1 pollion baits were distributed during the month the weather through january in hibst parts of 0 the state continued extremely cold with considerable fog through the greater part of the north ern halt half of the state where hunters revisited their large stations they found they were frozen so hard it was difficult tor for animals to teed feed from them in the northern halt of the bbate ther ewas enough snow enow in th the e loot foothills hills to make it easy for coyotes to lo catch rabbits because fh the e weather remained so BO cold that the snow did not settle but remained loose and luffy fluffy john W and sears M willis continued hunting lion with logs dogs in the zions canyon country and were successful in taking four adult lions they report having some tough chases after some of these animals ono one lion they were able ablerto to tree after following its trail tor four days through some pome of the rougher parts of the canyon area it was necessary to let their dogs over ledges with ropes la in two or three places where the lion had gone they let their dogs go on a trail of one of the lions about 1000 0 clock in the morning and followed foll iwed it away iram from camp until at night when they reached a point near where the dogs had the lion treed on top of a big ledge it was so dark it was necessary to build a big fire so that one of them could crawl up through the ledges and shoot the lion when the ito lion n was shot it tell fell over th the e ledge into some rough country bordering a deep canyon the boys built a bonfire and laid out all night the next morning after getting their dogs down out of the ledges with ropes to where their hora es ea were and recovering the lion on they made for camp reaching there about dark they reported having eaten a light breakfast and not taking any lunch with them so they were mighty glad when they arrived at camp camato to ind find art perry had got into int c camp during their absence and ana h had a d taken car care of the horses which they had left tied up in camp and had a good hot meal reaty tor for them alvin and otis dickinson spent part of the month hunting lion in sauna salina canyon and Soren bon was successful in getting an adult female in that area one day when dickinson was atter after supplies L la dee bee talk taft was also successful in getting a mountain lion in the wayne county district lester leater L carter reports that a female coyote that he took on art january was carrying eight unborn young this is a rather early report and we should like to have oil all ot of you keep keel check on the female animals taken in the future and report findings As aa the time la drawing near when it will be necessary for some ot of you to destroy destroy poison stations oi on your range before the livestock enter I 1 wish to call your attention to the fact that we desire you to report on your you itineraries the number of 0 poison stations destroyed extreme care roust be exercised to see that all small baits placed around the stations are destroyed and reported destroyed effective january let mr leo L lythe who has been in charge of predatory animal rodent control work in colorado for a number of years was appointed regional supervisor for the states batea of colorado montana south dakota wyoming and utah three ther other regional supervisors were adz appointed to work with the leaders of the he different states in assisting in developing and putting into practice better and more up to date methods and to assist in the developing and maintaining more efficient work and cooperation with the different states air laythe has had a world of experience peri ence in both lines of activity and we feel sure will bo be able to give us a good deal of help when he pays paya us a visit we expect to have him with us for some time the latter part of estimated number of animals killed march and hope that eventually he rutty may bo be able to meet all of the hunters and many of the cooperators in the state this item should haven have been mentioned in the december news letter but was inadvertently left out we want every one of you to be on your toes to check up on all of your poison work and give us all the information you can with regard to the alth ith your poison as you go back to your stations this spring and all details possible with regard to tho the destruction st of any fur bearing animals that may be found around your stations we wa want you to
