Show feeding experiment closes at garfield county farm the past winter the experiment peri ment farm at pan gultch in cooperation with W W houston conducted a test lest of rations tor for wintering range calves the purpose ot of the experiment was waa to determine tern itne the value ot of the various feeds tor for winter maintenance and growth also alao to determine whether it is moat profitable considering the whole years growth to feed calves during the winter to just maintain the weight they are in the tall fall or to make them grow grew 1 A pound I 1 pound or 2 pounds d dally a ity during the winter feeding period when they are to be grazed upon u pon the national forest during the following summer four lots ot of calves each containing 10 head were fed days the accompanying table shows rations used weights costs etc athe the two check lots which were fed alfalfa and straw gained about 12 pound per head per lay day those consuming one pound of chopped barley additional gained 8 pounds pound and those on oil straw staw st aw and cotton seed cake gained 92 pounds per day the calves are properly identified and will be g 1 lito alto their heir respective lots lota ag 1 m the tall fall and weighed to determine the growth made during the summer and also alao during the entire pearlly ye year arlly by the individual calves and by tile the different lots lols the feeding period closed on may 4 and the stock kmen lomen of the section were invited to visit the farm on may hay 6 to see the cattle and the experimental results and to hear talks by representatives es of the animal Ilus husbandry bandry department of the utah S state tate agricultural tu ral college dean III B J maynard of logan and C A hymas of junction were present and both were optimistic over tile the livestock outlook dean maynard advised production in i n anticipation of 0 t better prices |
